ASCT Presents: Advanced Bodywork Series
Spinal Mechanics & The Tensegrity Spine
With Art Riggs and James Earls

Art Riggs is an Advanced
Rolfer living in the San
Francisco area who has been
teaching bodywork since
1987. His classes are a
masterful blend of technical
information and insightful
practical theory that will
greatly expand your view of
massage therapy.

He is the author of the book,
Deep Tissue Massage; A
Visual Guide To Techniques
and Deep Tissue Massage
and Myofascial Release: A
Video Guide to Techniques -
a highly acclaimed and
popular 11 hour DVD series,
as well as frequent articles in
U.S. bodywork magazines.
Proper spinal function is a balance between the free movement of
strain patterns imposed by the muscles and fascial system.  In
order to perform therapeutic bodywork it is necessary to under-
stand the precise mechanics of how these bones articulate.  The
first day will explain spinal mechanics, both at the spine and at the
articulation of the ribs.

From this foundation, we will present nuts and bolts techniques to
provide better mobility of the spine at the osseous level and also to
free ribs from their articulation with the spine so they may better
perform their complicated movement patterns.

You will be able to:
  • Provide better mobility at the facets between vertebrae to
improve side-bending, rotation, flexion, and extension
  • Work with the small muscles that both move and can restrict
    joint function
  • Unwind “stuck” ribs to improve breathing
  • Place your clients in innovative positions to improve specific
    joint function and improve flexibility.

During the second day we will examine the spine as a tensegrity
truss – how the bones float within the myofascial balance. An
integral part of structure we all know the agonizing effects of
incorrect mechanics when it doesn’t work and often fail to
appreciate the wonderfully adaptive job it does when the vertebrae
are allowed to ‘float’.

By putting the spine into context with the surrounding structures we
can better understand the reasons for its limitations and its
wondrous abilities.

Once we explain the logic pattern the soft-tissue patterns that
surround the spine then through the assessment and learning our
techniques for freeing and balancing them you will be able to
address:
  1. Anterior and posterior curvatures – lordosis and kyphosis
  2. Side bends
  3. Rotations (and counter-rotations)
  4. Guy-wires on both the front and the back of the spine
  5. Balancing trunk spinal work into the cervical spine and the
    cranium.

Proper function of the spine is dependent upon many factors, and
this workshop will give you useful tools to deal with many of the
spinal issues that your clients bring to your practice.  We will first
spinal issues that your clients bring to your practice.  We will first
ribs and then delve into the broader myofascial system - how it
both supports the spine and how restrictions can cause dysfunction.
Both sections will offer numerous techniques to give better balance
to the body.
This workshop will be taught by Art Riggs (author of Deep Tissue
Massage Manual) and James Earls (co-author of Fascial Release for
Structural Balance). This workshop is a unique opportunity to hear
the combined approaches from these excellent and popular
speakers.
